Martial arts competition results!

🥈🥈Double second place in the BJJ competition! 🎉🎉

Two different divisions contested on the same day. One with ‘gi’ (wearing the traditional uniform, pronounced GHEE) and one ‘no-gi’ (without the gi).

👉And I qualified for the Championship event in June.

I’m happy with my results but could be happier with my performance.

I didn’t do as well in my matches as I wanted to.

I didn’t lose ANY matches, but I didn’t win the way I wanted. This tournament was a victory by ‘submission-only’, so no points are scored for dominant positions or near finishes. If neither person can achieve a submission from the other, the match is a draw.

With the rules of Submission League, each competitor scores points from the results of a match. +3 points for submitting your opponent, but only +1 for each of you if neither submits the other. Your point total is divided by the number of matches you had and that result becomes your overall score.

So even though I was in dominant positions and had a lot of great reversals in matches one and two, I didn’t submit my opponent either. In match number three my opponent was injured in his prior match so I got a bye, and in match number four I won. Then I had one more match to break a tie. I submitted that guy also.

So I feel like I only really *beat* two of my opponents. And since I didn’t get a chance to score any points from the opponent I didn’t wrestle, I was in second place overall.

A bit of good news for me was that the guy who got first in my division was promoted to a blue belt on the podium. It would’ve been awesome if I was able to beat him but at least I drew with him. It's comforting to lose to a guy who got promoted because that means he was already nearly too good for the division.

That was all in the morning, then in the early afternoon, I had the no-gi competition. Faster and more abrupt than gi techniques. One of my opponents didn’t make weight so I got another free win, and once again I didn’t lose, or beat, the other two guys in my weight class.

The big mistake I made in the competition was being too urgent. Not so methodical in setting up my submissions therefore my opponent was able to escape at the last second more often than they ever do in my sparring at the school.
